Simulation modeling trends and innovations: highlights from the AnyLogic Conference 2024

The AnyLogic Conference 2024 logo

Over the years, simulation modeling has proven to be vitally important across various industries, from mining to manufacturing and warehouse operations, and so many more. This September, the AnyLogic Conference 2024 gathered leaders from different business fields to showcase the impact simulation modeling has had on optimization and process improvements.

As always, the Conference featured an amazing workshop and presentations from the AnyLogic team, product updates, and discussions about what the future holds for the simulation modeling industry.

Let’s explore key takeaways and highlights from the 2024 edition of the Conference in our blog post.

Presentations from global leaders

The AnyLogic Conference counted more than 18 presentations from leading companies showcasing the implementation of simulation modeling tools and innovative approaches, such as digital twins and low-code solutions. Attendees learned about new potential applications of simulation modeling. Below, we highlight some of the world-class examples presented during the event.

Intel Corporation shared its innovative use of AnyLogic to optimize warehouse operations with advanced robotics technologies. The simulation model included a detailed physical layout, robot specifications, and advanced algorithms for order assignment, routing, and collision avoidance.

Petronas showcased the application of AnyLogic to manage refinery inventories and optimize logistics via a simulation value chain model. It forecasts inventory levels and allows planners to test different vessel allocation strategies.

Gousto explained how they enhanced their factory operations by developing a digital twin. Gousto’s team presented a 3D digital twin of its factory, which serves as a virtual environment for testing, validating, and improving new ideas. This approach boosted Gousto’s site efficiency by 20% over two years while expanding product variety.

Netherlands Railways presented research on how driver planning propagates train delays. The core of the study was agent-based modeling in AnyLogic. The new simulation model combined the timetable, rolling stock schedule, and crew plan. It helped estimate the behavior of the train units, crew members, and dispatching.

Novelis introduced a data-driven simulation framework specifically designed for aluminum plants. Built using AnyLogic, this framework allows for the rapid creation of simulation models through a low-code approach. It accelerated model development by focusing on data schemas rather than traditional coding.

Revolution in AnyLogic 3D animation

One of our product presentations was dedicated to the introduction of the new AnyLogic integration with the NVIDIA Omniverse.

This integration represents a significant leap forward in terms of 3D animation and visualization for simulation modeling. The NVIDIA Omniverse is known for enabling physically accurate rendering and highly detailed 3D models. So AnyLogic simulations will be able to feature realistic 3D visuals, improving both the models' immersion and realism. This is especially beneficial when simulating environments like factories, logistics centers, or urban areas with high visual accuracy. Many attendees saw this update as a game changer in 3D animation of simulation modeling.

In the demo tour, the presenters explained how to connect an AnyLogic model to the NVIDIA Omniverse and showcased key features that will soon become available thanks to this integration. Find out more about the future of 3D animation in AnyLogic models in the video below.

AnyLogic 8: product updates and roadmap

The Conference attendees were the first ones to see the latest upcoming features of AnyLogic 8. Anastasia Zhiliaeva from the AnyLogic 8 team highlighted updates such as native support of new databases and material handling library improvements. These changes come with AnyLogic 8.9.1, which is already available for download.

Anastasia also shared what updates AnyLogic users can expect in the next months and 2025. These include parking lot improvements, include/exclude functionality of car roads, and, of course, the NVIDIA Omniverse connector, which will become available for all users of AnyLogic.

For more details on the newest and upcoming features, watch the video from the conference below.

Advancements in AnyLogic Cloud

The latest product updates for AnyLogic Cloud were also presented during the AnyLogic Conference. Gregory Monakhov highlighted two major features: the Completed Runs View and Custom Single Sign-On (SSO).

The Completed Runs View allows users to efficiently manage and analyze their simulation runs by sorting, filtering, and downloading data, as well as importing it into tools like Tableau and PowerBI. While the Custom SSO feature enhances user management by integrating various identity providers (e.g., Google, Microsoft, OKTA).

For more details on these updates that aim to improve model management and user experience, check out the video from the Conference below.

Hands-on workshops

In addition to the insightful presentations, webinar participants were invited to join hands-on workshops.

At the workshop “One Skill to Rule Them All—Problem-Solving for AnyLogic,” Dr. Benjamin Schumann shared his 15 years of experience addressing modeling and simulation challenges. He unveiled the most important skill in mastering AnyLogic: problem-solving. Ben guided attendees through addressing problems of varying size and complexity, regardless of their experience level.

Dr. Andrei Borshchev, Nikolay Churkov, and Yulia Tropina led a highly practical workshop, offering participants a hands-on experience with AnyLogic 9. The viewers followed step-by-step instructions to build a supply chain model directly in their browser, getting the first user experience of the upcoming AnyLogic 9.
